A Memorable Stay at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa
Attending the CHARGE Syndrome Conference with Individuals with Complex Accessibility & Medical Needs
Recently, our family had a truly grand experience at the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona while attending the CHARGE Syndrome Conference – The Grand Adventure. From the moment we arrived, it was clear this luxury resort offered more than beautiful surroundings—it delivered comfort, thoughtful accessibility, and opportunities for connection and fun.
We attended the biannual conference hosted by the CHARGE Syndrome Foundation, which brings together individuals with CHARGE syndrome—a medically complex condition—along with families and professionals for education, support, and community. The JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge exceeded our expectations, not only in accommodating the complex accessibility and medical needs of conference attendees, but also in creating a welcoming and enjoyable experience for our entire family.
When we weren’t attending educational sessions, enjoying meals, or participating in evening family-friendly conference events, we took full advantage of the many amenities the resort has to offer.
Our Family’s Experience
Our guest room was spacious and comfortable for our family of four, featuring two queen beds and a charming balcony overlooking the pools and surrounding mountains, with a partial view of the golf course. That balcony quickly became one of my favorite parts of our stay—my perfect little “mom escape” for quiet mornings with a cup of coffee.
As a family, we especially enjoyed the variety of pools, shops, and dining options available right on the property. Whenever we had a break from conference activities, you could find us exploring the resort or heading to one of the pools.
Our favorite was the large central pool, surrounded by plenty of luxury lounge chairs and featuring a large waterfall that appealed to both kids and adults. Our son Cole, who has CHARGE syndrome, loved this pool because it offered built-in seating along the pool’s edge, allowing him to be immersed in the water in a way that felt comfortable and safe for his abilities. Meanwhile, his younger brother Parker enjoyed swimming freely and playing under the waterfall.
When Parker was ready for more excitement, he headed to the waterslides, which added another layer of fun to our days. As parents, we’re always looking for experiences that are inclusive for Cole while still allowing Parker to be active—and this resort delivered that balance beautifully.
Dining Highlights
While we appreciated the meals provided as part of the conference, we also made time to explore the resort’s dining options. One evening, we enjoyed dinner at Meritage – An Urban Tavern. Despite the name, Meritage offers an upscale tavern atmosphere with elevated American cuisine.
For our family, this restaurant became a quiet and relaxing escape from the busyness of the conference and was easily our standout dining experience during the stay.
Accessibility & Comfort
One of the aspects we appreciated most about the JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa was its thoughtful accessibility. The pools were equipped with accessible pool lifts, making it possible for everyone to enjoy the water. Throughout the resort, there were ample comfortable seating areas and cozy spaces to rest—perfect for breaks between sessions or moments of calm.
Cole, who has limited balance and mobility and uses a white cane due to low vision, found the resort easy to navigate. The walkways were smooth, signage was clear, and the elevators were easy to locate, contributing to his sense of independence and confidence.
Many individuals with CHARGE syndrome have complex medical, sensory, and physical needs that require careful accessibility planning. This can include considerations for vision and hearing differences, mobility support, medical coordination, communication access, fatigue management, and the need for safe, predictable environments. Every individual’s needs are unique, and thoughtful planning is essential for comfort, safety, and full participation.
The JW Marriott Phoenix Desert Ridge Resort & Spa provided ADA accommodations and more—from its well-designed layout to a staff that was genuinely welcoming and respectful of all individuals.

With its luxurious amenities, inclusive design, and warm, welcoming atmosphere, this resort truly created a memorable and meaningful experience for our family—and for the many families and individuals attending the CHARGE Syndrome Conference.
