Evan Williams Bourbon Distillery Review
Located on historic Whiskey Row and an official stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, the Evan Williams Bourbon Experience highlights the legacy of Evan Williams as Kentucky’s first licensed distiller. The distillery offers a range of tours and tastings, beginning at $20 for guests 21+, with reduced pricing for those under 21 who wish to participate in the historical and educational portions. Options range from a Traditional Tour & Tasting to immersive distillery experiences and a speakeasy-style tasting. Visitors can also enjoy the ON3 Cocktail Bar without booking a tour. (Refer to the distillery’s website for the most up-to-date offerings and pricing.)
The atmosphere throughout the experience is warm and inviting, with rich brown tones reflecting the varying hues of bourbon. Historical replicas of Whiskey Row storefronts create a cozy, immersive environment that truly transports guests back in time. The distillery is generally open seven days a week, with ON3 and the gift shop operating on similar hours. Advance purchase for tours are strongly recommended.
There are three main parking areas nearby, including a paid surface lot adjacent to the distillery (approximately $20). Handicap-accessible spaces are located near the sidewalk close to the entrance; however, the payment kiosk is positioned toward the back of the lot. For guests with mobility needs, a drop-off area is available directly in front of the entrance. The facility entrance is street level with no stairs required.
Our group of seven visited on a Saturday afternoon in December, making it a festive holiday outing. We selected the Evans Williams Bourbon Distillery for our group because their website states that the facility is ADA accessible which would be well-suited to a range of interests, ages, and abilities. We chose the Traditional Tour & Bourbon Tasting because this tour offered a little of everything from viewing the distillery process, to learning about the history of Evan Williams while ending with a traditional bourbon tasting experience.
The structured one-hour experience began with a historical video outlining the story of Evan Williams. Due to Cole’s hearing impairment, he had difficulty hearing the video but used the Otter AI app to generate a transcript similar to closed captioning. Sitting in the front row helped with his low vision, though the intentionally low-contrast historical footage remained challenging to see. One bench in the front row was shortened, allowing space for a wheelchair or mobility device without requiring transfer.
Following the video, the tour transitioned into a highly visual, high-contrast presentation of the distilling process, which was much easier for Cole to view up close. During the production portion, most guests ascended stairs to a landing; Cole and a companion accessed the next level via a glass-enclosed elevator, which allowed them to remain engaged and rejoin the group seamlessly.
Walking along the cobblestone-style interior streets with replicated storefronts was a highlight—it truly felt like stepping back into early Kentucky bourbon history. The tour concluded in a dimly lit, cozy tasting room before ending on the second floor near the gift shop.
Staff interactions were consistently positive. The tour guide gladly wore Cole’s personal mini-microphone, which connected directly to his hearing device and significantly enhanced his experience. The guide’s passion for bourbon history and willingness to accommodate accessibility needs stood out.
Overall, our group enjoyed the experience. For Cole, the structured tour required sustained focus, and while he would likely have appreciated a bit more downtime to better support his sensory and mobility needs, he still enjoyed the experience. The pace and structure of the tour worked very well for the other members of our group. Our goal in sharing this review is to provide insight so others can determine whether the physical layout, structure, and sensory environment will be a good fit for them, regardless of ability.
Rating 5: Our group thoroughly enjoyed learning about the rich history of Evan Williams. The website accurately reflected what to expect, the staff were friendly and accommodating, and the physical layout worked well for our group’s diverse needs.
